2009 Course Descriptions
•Open Enrollment Mill Access: The Jacquard Center & The Oriole Mill printable PDF
These open enrollment classes are open to anyone who wants to learn how to make loom-ready files, for industrial Jacquard looms, in order to weave their designs. Artists are present at the loom when their designs weave into cloth.
The 2009 schedule offers weekend classes, starting on Saturday and ending on Tuesday. The first day of class will include a tour of the weave room at the mill, looking closely at the setup that will be used during the class. The process of making a loom ready file is far easier to grasp after having seen the loom operate. Understanding the connection between what is seen on the computer screen and the cloth that results is the foundation of Jacquard designing.
Saturday and Sunday will be spent preparing the designs and creating the loom files. Monday and Tuesday will be spent weaving at The Oriole Mill.
Instruction and technical support is provided by Bethanne Knudson.
March 28 - April 3, 2009: Damask, natural cotton warp, 101 epi
September 26 - September 29, 2009: 6 end cotton Tapestry warp, 81 epi
October 24 - October 27, 2009: Damask, black cotton warp, 51 epi
Tuition: $900.00 per person for 3 to 4 people
Minimum enrollment is 3, maximum enrollment is 4.
Minimum Weaving cost per person:
$500 (this covers 10,000 weft insertions)
Weaving beyond 10,000 insertions is charged at five cents per weft insertion. (A weft insertion is the equivalent of a single shuttle throw on a hand loom or a single Jacquard card in industry language.)
Pre-requisites:
Knowledge of weave structures and the ability to use a Macintosh computer is required. This class serves as a pre-requisite for all other Mill Access classes offered through The Jacquard Center.
Mill Access Weaving Schedule:
Monday - Thursday, scheduled on an as-needed basis. The goal is to accommodate the needs of the individuals in the class, while keeping the disruption of mill production to a minimum.
A kit, including all technical information, fabric samples and weave blankets, will be loaned to each member of the class, in advance of the class. Bring the kit to The Jacquard Center, in original condition, to use during the class. (If the kit is returned in original condition, there is no charge for its use. If the kit is damaged or fails to be returned, a charge of $250.00 will apply.)
Following the directions included in the kit will allow everyone to arrive with properly prepared images. This can be done in Photoshop, completed before arriving at The Jacquard Center.
Students may bring their own weft yarn, if desired. (The cost of weaving is the same whether you use the mill's yarn or your own weft yarn.) Selection of yarns to bring -- or ship here in advance -- needs to be based on the guidelines for size and fiber included in the kit.
Each person is encouraged to bring a laptop, with Photoshop installed, for working on their images. Wireless internet is available at The Jacquard Center. Computers with JacqCAD MASTER® will be available at The Jacquard Center and at The Oriole Mill. These will be used for applying the technical information needed to communicate with the loom.

A deposit of $450.00, per student, is required to reserve the requested time slot. If the student cancels, there is no refund of the deposit. However, if TJC or the mill cancels the class a full refund will be made.
Determining Teacher qualifications and experience:
Ideally, all teachers offering this class have knowledge and experience in making loom ready files for an industrial Jacquard machine. The Jacquard Center will provide the teacher with a questionnaire to determine the amount of support needed during the proposed class. This will also inform the selection of which loom setup is most appropriate for the class. No class will be scheduled until after the information provided in response to the questionnaire is evaluated.
Especially for groups larger than four students, bringing more than one teacher is strongly encouraged.
•Introduction to Mill Access: Repeat Patterning and Yardage
This class will focus on the development of repeated patterns in yardage. Students will be taken thru the steps necessary to create successful repeat patterns on a Jacquard loom. A number of soft ware options are possible- Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and JacqCAD MASTER®.
Information will be provided, in advance of the class, to allow students to prepare files, before arriving at The Jacquard Center. Weaves and weave blankets will be provided for in-class use.
We'll spend the morning working to produce loom files. Following a lunch break, the class will go to the mill at 1:00 p.m. each day. After student files are woven the class will return to The Jacquard Center. Three mill visits are included.
Pre-requisites: Students should have some familiarity with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.
•Introduction to Mill Weaving: Dobby and Jacquard
This class is a good first step for anyone considering doing weaving in a mill. Class will begin by developing WIF files for dobby. Students will have access to AVL Industrial dobby looms and a 24 shaft Dornier industrial dobby. Information about warps, threadings and setts, will be provided in advance of the class, to allow students to prepare before arriving at The Jacquard Center.
During the second half of the class students will receive an introduction to JacqCAD MASTER® software and the weaving of satins and twills. The class will have access to an industrial Jacquard loom.
Prerequisites: Each student must have a solid understanding of weave structure and some experience with weaving software.
•Introduction to Mill Weaving: 6-end Tapestry
Students will learn to understand the 6-warp end weave structures used by industrial mills and to apply that knowledge to their own designs. Students will have controlled access to The Oriole Mill to test their fabrics and to weave complete pieces of cloth.
Weaves and weave blankets will be provided for in-class use.
Instruction and lab time will occupy the morning. Following a lunch break, the class will go to the mill at 1:00 p.m. each day. When student files are woven, the class will return to The Jacquard Center. The class will have the opportunity to weave on each of the four days of class.
Pre-requisites:
Students should be familiar with Macintosh computers, and should have a working knowledge of both basic and complex weave structures such as double-weave. It is helpful to have knowledge of Photoshop or other graphics software, but not a necessity.
•Introduction to Mill Weaving: Damask
The class will explore using shading satins and twills. We’ll weave on unbleached 100% Egyptian long staple Pima cotton which has been gassed and mercerized, giving it a beautiful luster. The solid color warp will be set at 195 epi and will weave two repeats across 60 inches. Information will be provided, in advance of the class, to allow students to prepare images before arriving at The Jacquard Center.
Each student must have a solid understanding of weave structure and use of Macintosh computers. Experience with graphic software is also very helpful.
•Texture with 6-end Tapestry Weave Structures

Controlled mill access on a daily basis is available so that students can weave both samples and whole pieces.
Previous mill-access class through The Jacquard Center is required. Solid knowledge of complex weave structures as well as knowledge of Macintosh computers and graphic software is strongly recommended.
Jacquard Studies
We offer many classes in Jacquard Studies for the commercial and non-commercial user, and we continue to add to the offerings each year.
Mill Access: Jacquard
We use industrial power looms with Jacquard machine heads ranging from 3150 hooks to 6144 hooks. The power looms run at about 350 pick insertions per minute. The ends per inch range from 50 epi to 195 epi. The warps include solid color, end and end, triple cloth, four and six end tapestry. Some looms are set up with harnessed repeats, some weave a single image across the full width. The warps, unless otherwise specified are 100% long-staple, Egyptian mercerized cotton. A variety of weft yarns are available for student use. In some cases students may bring their own weft yarns.
Cost of weaving files is in addition to the cost of tuition. The cost of weaving is based on each card, i.e., each weft insertion. Cost per yard varies by the number of insertions per inch. Please contact The Jacquard Center for a current price list.
Classes run Monday through Thursday. Mill Access classes go to the mill each afternoon.
Jacquard setups available for classes:
Damask fabric: 101.3 epi, 52 ppi is typical. This fabric is 60" wide with no repeat. The warp is a solid, unbleached cotton. The yarn has a beautiful luster. Figuring is created through the contrast of weave structures and can be further accentuated by using a contrasting color in the weft. (Jacquard Loom 5)
Standard Tapestry fabric: 81.7 epi, 30 picks per inch is standard. The fabric is 54 inches wide, with no repeat. The warp consists of a six color rotation which mixes with a three filling rotation, typically comprised of a white, a black and a binder pick. The warp and figuring weft yarns are 100% cotton. Weaves and weave blankets will be made available for in-class use. (Jacquard Loom 2)
Dobby Studies
Mill Access: Dobby
We use industrial rapier and automated-shuttle dobby looms, ranging from 24 inch to 124 inch weaving widths and 12 to 24 harness shafts. The shuttle looms produce a traditional handwoven-quality selvedge.
